General Information
The College of Resources and Environmental Sciences (CRES) was formally established in May 1996 on the basis of the Department of Soil Science and the Department of Agro-Chemistry at Nanjing Agricultural University. Its predecessors were the Department of Agro-chemistry of the National Central University, the Soil Sciences Group at Jinling University, as well as part of the Department of Agro-chemistry and the College of Agriculture at Zhejiang University. It has a history of 80 years. Up to now, the college has trained more than 2500 graduates specialized in Soil Science and Agro-Chemistry, Microbiology, and the Protection of Agricultural Environments. Distinguished scientists who either graduated from or worked in the college include Members of the Chinese Academy of Science: Hou Guangjun, Zhu Xianmo, Wang Debao, Zhang Shen and the Member of the Chinese Academy of Engineering: Cai Daoji.
There are 78 faculty and staff members, including 18 full Professors (15 of them are PhD Supervisors), and 23 Associate Professors, nearly 600 undergraduate students, 500 post-graduate students. The college consists of three departments: the Department of Plant Nutrition, the Department of Soil Science and Land Resources, and the Department of Environmental Protection. Both Plant Nutrition and Soil Science are the national key disciplines. There are one engineering center of National Educational Ministry and two provincial key laboratories: High tech lab of recycling use of solid organic wastes for producing microbe organic fertilizers, Marine Biology Lab of Jiangsu Province. The college offers three BSc programs, six MSc programs and five PhD programs.
PhD Programs: Soil Science, Plant Nutrition, Ecology, Environmental Quality Control, Marine biology
MSc Programs: Soil Science, Plant Nutrition, Environmental Engineering, Environmental Science, Ecology, Marine Biology
BSc Programs: Agricultural Resources and Environment, Environmental Engineering, and Environmental Science
To facilitate scientific research, the following research laboratories and institutes have been established: the Research Laboratory of Paddy Field Ecology, the Plant Nutrition Research Laboratory, the Research Laboratory of Agricultural Environmental Protection, the Research Laboratory of Coastal Resource Exploitation and Utilization, the Research Institute of Agricultural Resources and Ecological Environment (established 1992), the Center of Environmental and Energy Engineering Research and Design (established 1996), the Center of Coastal Engineering and Technological (established 1997). In the past 5 years, some faculty members at the college have chaired and been involved in more than 150 research projects at the national, ministerial or provincial levels. The annual research budget surpassed RMB 10 million. More than 30 research programs have obtained scientific and technological progress awards at the national, ministerial or provincial levels. The faculty members have published approximately 900 papers in both national and international scientific journals, including many high ranking journals, such as GLOBAL CHANGE BIOLGY, ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENCE TECHNOLOGY, PLANT PHYSIOLOGY, PLANT JOURNAL, NEW PHYTOLOGIST, PLANT CELL AND ENVIRONMENT, JOURNAL OF EXPERIMENTAL BOTANY, PLANT CELL AND PHYSIOLOGY, ADVANCES IN AGRONOMY, SOIL BIOLOGY AND BIOCHEMISTRY.
Close relationships have been established with the Rothamsted Experimental Station in the United Kingdom, Kiel University and Libitz University in Germany, Kagawa University in Japan, Hebrew University and Agricultural Research Organization in Israel, Ohio State University in the United States, the University of Melbourne in Australia, and the Baptist University in Hong Kong, China. More and more scientists and students of the college are going to abroad for research or further studies. The college has also made great progress in the application of scientific achievements. High-tech products and state-of-the-art technologies have played important roles in agricultural production. To name a few of these products and technologies: Highly Effective foliar Fertilizers, Root Promotion Fertilizers, Organic Fertilizers containing isolated special microbes, Sludge Handling Technology, and the Technology of Green Food Production.
